I bought a 2005 WRX brand new and from the beginning I have had to put 3+ quarts of oil in the engine between oil changes. I use all synthetics since the first oil change. I see no oil on the ground or in the engine. All the seals on manifold were changed in the 2nd or 3rd year after they could find nothing the matter. When that didn't work I was told that my usage was normal/ within guide lines. Does anybody else use this much oil? or is my car a glutton? Thanks for any and all answers and ideas. Iam

Hi Iam - How many miles do you rack up between the oil changes?

Between 3500 and 3700. I need to put oil in it anywheres from 700 mile to 900 plus. by 900 to 1 k it will take a quart, sometimes less miles. 700 miles it will take a half to 3/4 of a quart. But by the time I reach 3500 I have put more than 3 quarts in it. That seems like so much. When I told the dealer in the beginning they said they could find nothing wrong. After 2 years they said it was the seals around the manifold. O K fine.. They change them, but oil consumption remains the same. as it has from the start. I understand turbos use more oil, but this seems a little bit excessive. I am really stuck. I don't know if it's normal to use this much ( no one else I've talked to uses this much) or did I get a pig? I need to know before I pursue this further and deeper.

That is a lot, but not enough to be a serious concern. As long as the car is running well and you are keeping the oil topped up it will run as well as a non oil burning WRX. Obviously it's annoying and an expense you don't need on top of all the other expenses of owning a car.
If you aren't using synthetic oil, switch over at your next service, and i'm 99% confident you will see a decrease in oil usage. Amsoil and Valvoline are the best brands in my personal experience. If nothing changes, it could be a number of things, but quite often it's the turbocharger itself. I've personally had a turbo that leaked oil and replacing it wasn't as expensive as I thought it was going to be. If you go to a good dedicated Subaru workshop, they're so quick at swapping them over that it doesn't cost a lot (about $80 in my case). Good excuse to upgrade the turbo too
